So here is the big idea. Let your eyes do the job your feet can't. Your eyes can spot what numb feet may not feel.

Step one. Check your whole foot, every single day. Pick a time you'll remember, like right before bed. Sit down in good light where you can see clearly. Look at the tops of your feet. Then the soles, on the bottom. Then the sides. And don't forget between your toes, a spot that's easy to miss. Can't see the bottoms? That's common. Use a small mirror on the floor, or ask someone to look for you.

Step two. Now you know where to look. Here's what to look for. Watch for cuts or scratches. Redness. Blisters. And any swelling. Also notice changes, like a corn, a callus, a crack in dry skin, or a spot that changed color. Anything new, or anything that looks different from yesterday, matters. If you see a new spot, don't wait and wonder. Tell your nurse about it.

Step three. Keep your feet clean and dry. Wash them each day with warm water. But here's a key safety tip. Numb feet can't always tell hot from warm. So test the water with your elbow first, like a baby's bath. Don't soak them. A quick wash is enough. Then dry them well, especially between your toes. Moisture left there can break down the skin.

Step four. Never go barefoot. Bare feet can step on a tack, a toy, or a hot floor, and you may not feel it. So wear shoes, even at home. And put on clean, dry socks each day. And one quick habit before you slide a shoe on. Reach in and feel for a pebble or a rough seam that could rub a sore.

A few more habits to protect your feet. Check inside your shoes first. Wear clean, dry socks. Skip socks with tight bands that squeeze. And keep your feet away from heat, like heaters and heating pads, which can burn skin you can't feel.

Now, the part to take seriously. Call your nurse the same day if you find any of these. A sore that won't heal. Redness, warmth, or swelling. Skin that turns black or blue. Or a bad smell or any drainage. These can be signs of infection, and foot problems grow fast. Don't wait. Make that call.

Here's a helpful tip. See a foot doctor at least once a year. And let them handle tough toenails, corns, or calluses, instead of cutting them yourself.
